In researching this
wonderful breed, you will find that a bitch named Trump, acquired
by the Reverend John Russell in 1819, was to become the foundation
of his own strain of working terriers, to which he gave his name.
Originally bred for fox hunting, they are so versatile they also
work raccoon, woodchuck, (groundhog) and opossum.
The Jack Russell is
a dog who digs, barks, and goes wherever a fox can go. He may live
peaceably with a cat, household pet or bird, but one day his hunting
instinct may kick in and you could lose your small pet. They
are NOT a breed for everyone; can be destructive if ignored, or
don't get enough exercise.
Jack Russells are
too frequently hit by cars, as they are so intent on hunting they
tend to ignore any danger in their focused quest. Jack Russells
of the same sex may have 'same sex aggression', therefore are not
recommended for the standard pet home.
The Jack Russell is
a unique breed of terrier; one who has kept the working abilities
for which it was bred. This is due to the dedicated, knowledgeable,
responsible and ethical breeders of whom we are proud to be members.
We at Mad River take our job seriously to protect and ensure the
soundness of the breed for future generations, by breeding working
terriers with integrity and sound temperaments.
